The Hollywood Reporter announced on Tuesday that Kevin Hart is producing an upcoming movie for Universal called Run The Jewels.
Not thrilled with this title? Rappers El-P and Killer Mike, the duo behind the hip-hop collective of the same name as the proposed film.
The premise of the movie is about a group of failed rappers who decide to rob a hip-hop mogul. That’s where the “run the jewels” title comes in: before the rap group claimed it as their moniker, it was best known as slang for robbery. It’s unknown whether or not El-P and Killer Mike copyrighted the phrase.
Still…they had some things to say when the news broke:
excuse me while I go starve a savage pack of lawyers for 7 days.— el-p (@therealelp)June 21, 2016
When another user posted a question asking why the people behind the film hadn’t contacted the band to let them know about the title before the press story, El-P responded: “prolly lost or [sic] number. its cool we’ll be calling them.”
So far, neither Universal nor Kevin Hart has responded to the rappers’ ire or legal threats.
